«Your health!..» – we usually say, raising our glasses and smiling. But what do we mean by that? Is this toast a sermon, an incantation, a plea to fate in the hope that unknown forces will give and help preserve... such a valuable asset? Does it not mean that we perceive health as a gift, and illness as a cruel fate, believing that the reason for everything is «bad luck», and our personal influence on this lottery is utterly insignificant? In this book, which emerged from a long conversation with people – a conversation that consisted of pain and joy, suffering and well-being, pleasures and disappointments, — we would like to show that health certainly depends on many factors that are not always under our control. However, we ourselves possess effective means to preserve, and even improve it.
