Kalevala

For the first time in more than a century and a half, the first prose translation of «Kalevala» returns to Russian readers, prepared by the famous St. Petersburg publisher and writer Eduard Andreevich Granström in 1881.
The world-famous Karelian-Finnish epic «Kalevala»,... based on ancient folk songs-runes, stands in significance and beauty alongside the Scandinavian «Edda», the German «Nibelungenlied» and Homer's «Iliad». Dozens of masterpieces were created under the influence of this epic, such as «The Silmarillion», «The Hobbit», and «The Lord of the Rings» by J.R.R. Tolkien, who, while inventing the language of the elves, imitated the sound of the melodies of «Kalevala».
A distinctive feature of our edition is not only a beautiful classical translation but also the rare illustrations, created by the classics of Finnish, European, and Russian book graphics, gathered for the first time in one edition.
