Inspector of Scotland Yard Alan Grant has always approached writers and journalists with caution, – however, he could not refuse the invitation of Lavinia Fitch to a seaside village favored by the London bohemia. Very soon, the peaceful, albeit somewhat boring, vacation is interrupted by a mysterious crime. The handsome photographer Leslie Searle disappears without a trace – and the local police immediately accuses young radio host Walter Whitmore of murder. At first glance, it is hard to argue with the conclusions of the provincial law enforcement officers. Didn’t Searle try to steal Whitmore’s fiancée? Didn’t these two have a fight? The police took the girl's testimony, in which she describes in great detail, down to the crack in the round window, the room where she was held. But is her story truthful? After all, the alleged kidnappers Marion Sharp and her elderly mother claim they have never seen this girl. One of them is lying. But which one? Lawyer Robert Blair takes on the impossible task: he must prove the women’s innocence.
