Before you is the most terrifying, most brutal, most uncompromising book about the First World War. A book in which every word is the truth. Frederick Manning 1882–1935 was born in Australia and gained fame early as a poet, moving to England in 1903.

Manning suffered from weak health since childhood and had an indomitable spirit, which allowed him to volunteer for the front despite several refusals at the start of the First World War. He found himself in the thick of the battle of the Somme, one of the bloodiest battles of the Western Front.

What he saw and experienced left a serious mark on his subsequent life, and in 1929 he published the novel "Intimate Places of Fortune," where one of the characters, Born, was based on Manning himself. "Intimate Places of Fortune" became a benchmark of war prose for English-language literature.

It is no wonder that Frederick Manning was named among the teachers by such diverse authors as Ernest Hemingway and Ezra Pound.
