Ryunosuke Akutagawa (1892-1927) — a writer considered one of the most significant authors of Japanese literature of the 20th century. The collection includes both stories that brought Akutagawa worldwide fame (for example, “Rashōmon,” which served as the basis for the... Oscar-winning film by Kurosawa, and “The Spider's Thread,” adapted into the anime anthology “Classical Stories”), as well as lesser-known stories that bear features of national originality for the Western reader. The adaptation of the stories, translation, cultural commentary, exercises, and glossary were done by Natalia Krneto, an associate professor in the Department of Japanese Philology at the Institute of Asian and African Studies at Lomonosov Moscow State University.
