The Pilgrim's Journey to the Celestial Country

The text is adorned with 101 illustrations by artists Frederick Barnard (1846–1896), Sir James Dromgoul Linton (1840–1916), William Small (1843–1931), and others; wood engravings by the London firm "Brothers Dalziel."
John Bunyan (1628–1688) — a classic of English religious literature, a Protestant preacher, now revered by the churches of the Anglican communion, the author of about sixty works, many of which are extended sermons. His most famous work is the great allegorical novel about a man's search for God, "The Pilgrim's Progress from This World to That Which Is to Come," traditionally referred to in Russian as "The Pilgrim's Journey to the Celestial Country." The novel was first published in 1678 (part one) and in 1688 (part two); during the author's lifetime, the first part went through eleven editions with a total circulation of more than one hundred thousand copies. Since then, the popularity of the novel has not diminished: it is one of the most widely known allegories ever written; the text has been translated into many languages, and Protestant missionaries often translated this book as second only to the Bible. Bunyan's novel had a significant influence on the development of both religious and secular literature; references to it can be found in the works of Charles Dickens, William Thackeray, Mark Twain, Louisa May Alcott, Alexander Sergeyevich Pushkin, Nikolai Semyonovich Leskov, and many other authors. The first translation of "The Pilgrim's Journey" into Russian was published in 1878 by the N. I. Novikov publishing house; however, it was heavily abridged and was not taken from the English original but from the German translation. In 1835, A. S. Pushkin created the poem "The Wanderer," which is a rhymed retelling of the first chapter of the novel; since then, this poem has traditionally been used before the main text in Russian editions of the allegory. In this book, the novel is published in the translation by Y. D. Z. — a pseudonym of Yulia Denisovna Zasetskaya (1835–1882), a notable Russian Protestant and daughter of the hero of the Patriotic War of 1812, Denis Davydov. This is the first complete translation of Bunyan's allegory into Russian, done with great care and attention to the text of the original, also accompanied by a biography of the author.
