1889, Edinburgh. A large family is hosting a séance — a popular pastime of the Victorian era. They invite a fortune teller named Madame Katerina to conduct it. But the morning after the séance, all the guests are found dead — except for Katerina. The fortune teller faces execution for the murder of six, but she vows she is innocent. It falls to two inspectors of the Scottish police — the nine-fingered Macgray, known for his fiery nature and love of the occult, and Ian Frey, a stiff dandy with excellent deductive skills — to unravel this mysterious case. Frey and Macgray will face numerous challenges — from a courtroom showdown with the most despicable prosecutor in the city to an encounter with the very underworld.
