A random phone call forces writer Daniel Quinn to don the mask of a private detective named Paul Auster. Someone named Belik hires private detective Sinkin to spy on a man with the last name Cherny. Fensho has vanished without a trace, leaving behind a young wife with a child and a manuscript of the novel "Nebulandiya."

The nameless narrator cannot resist the temptation to try on his role.
