Emil Verhaeren (1855-1916) was a Belgian Francophone poet and playwright. V.L. Bryusov was fascinated by Verhaeren, often translating his works and writing about him, adopting much of the symbolist tradition for Russian literature. Valery Yakovlevich referred to Verhaeren as "the Dante of modernity," but unfortunately, by the 21st century, his lyrics have largely been forgotten in Russia.
