Without the Sex Pistols, there would be no punk. And without Steve Jones, there would be no Sex Pistols. It was Steve, along with his school friend Paul Cook, who formed the band that eventually became known as the Sex...
Pistols and was the leader of this collective.
Steve's modern 'Dickensian' story begins on the streets of West London, where he, as a lonely street boy, lived on questionable means, engaging in petty theft and hooliganism. Hearing the glam art rock of David Bowie and the band Roxy Music, Steve was inspired to become a musician. He was one of the first punk ragamuffins, coming under the wing of Malcolm McLaren and Vivienne Westwood.
The book is written in simple language, but despite the intimate and cheerful storytelling style, one cannot help but feel that Steve's deep childhood wounds have never healed. He sadly recounts that his childhood was spent without a biological father, having to endure domestic violence from his stepfather. Enthralled by music and fashion at a young age, Steve essentially spared himself from a life behind bars.
A considerable part of the book is dedicated to the history of the Sex Pistols from Steve's perspective. This band recorded only one album, existed for about three years, and absurdly fell apart, leaving behind an immortal musical and cultural legacy.
