Judas Iscariot

The brilliant Russian writer Leonid Andreyev 1871–1919 is known as a master of dramaturgy and psychological storytelling. The quest for God, the search for light and comfort are characteristic of many of his characters, the sons of man, among whom... are the priest Vasily from Thebes, whose life resembles the endless trial of the righteous Job, and the simple merchant Merkulov, who instinctively performs Easter rituals, and the boy Sashka, who, amidst a life of misery, noticed and fell in love with a little wax angel… But such searches for faith are not serene and often remain unfinished, as these people seek their God, sometimes descending into the darkest and most terrifying depths of life from which they cannot escape.
