Thinner No. 4 for oil paints is also known as pinene. It is intended for dissolving and thinning oil, pentoil, alkyd paints, and for thinning varnishes. This substance has high dissolving power and low evaporation, being a product of the rectification of resinous turpentine, from which the resinous parts of turpentine are separated. Like turpentine, it is a completely natural product obtained from pine resin, only more finely refined. Pinene oxidizes significantly less than turpentine, which is not recommended for use in painting due to its tendency to yellow and resinify. Pinene is used as a paint and varnish thinner to reduce the consistency of paints and increase drying time. When mixed with paints, it makes them less saturated and thick, as well as reduces the gloss of the paints, so it should be used with caution. Over time, it yellow slightly, but less than turpentine.
