Vienna, early 20th century. Lucius Kshelevsky is a young man from an aristocratic Polish family. Unlike his brothers, who chose traditional pursuits for the nobility, he decides to become a doctor — however, in the middle of his studies in... Europe, a world war breaks out. Enchanted by romantic tales of military surgery, he enlists in the army, expecting to be sent to a well-organized field hospital. But when Lucius arrives at his posting in the Carpathian Mountains, he discovers that it is not a large hospital but rather an improvised hospital located in an old wooden church, ravaged by a typhus epidemic. The surviving medical staff has scattered; only a nun remains, surrounded by strange mystery. Lucius finds himself the only doctor for miles around, a surgeon, even though he has never operated on anyone before. What happens at his posting will forever change the life of Lucius and all those close to him. “Winter Soldier” is a story of war and medicine, a novel about the search for love amidst the turbulent waves of European history, about the mistakes everyone makes, and about the precious chance of redemption.
