Vienna, early 20th century. Lucius Kshelewski is a young man from an aristocratic Polish family. Unlike his brothers, who chose traditional activities for the gentry, he decides to become a doctor — however, in the midst of his studies in... Europe, a world war breaks out. Enchanted by romantic tales of military surgery, he enlists in the army, expecting to be sent to a well-organized field hospital. But when Lucius arrives at his place of service in the Carpathian Mountains, he discovers that it is not a large hospital, but an improvised infirmary located in an old wooden church, ravaged by a typhus epidemic. The surviving medical staff has fled, leaving only a nun surrounded by strange mystery. Lucius finds himself the only doctor for many miles around, a surgeon, although he has never operated on anyone before. What will happen at his place of service will forever change Lucius's life and the lives of all those close to him. “Winter Soldier” is a story of war and medicine, a novel about the search for love in the turbulent waves of European history, about the mistakes made by everyone, and about the precious chance for redemption.
