Spider Jerusalem is the Hunter Thompson of the coming days, a gonzo journalist of the triumphing cyberpunk era. Returning to the City after a five-year absence and immediately regaining fame through a live report on the police suppression of a riot by genetically modified trans individuals, Spider sets about doing what he does best – shaking the foundations of power. The President from the “law and order party,” whom Spider has dubbed the Monster, has retreated into political oblivion, and California Senator Gary Callahan, nicknamed Cheerful, has taken residence in the White House, having promised Spider shortly before his election victory: “No one can humiliate me like that. And get away with it. I will come for you, Jerusalem. I will grind you to dust. When you least expect it.” Well, the moment has come. In one fell swoop, Spider is stripped of his job, home, and access to his bank account. But, of course, the “journalist outside the law” was well-prepared for going underground.
