She graduated from Smith College, a private liberal arts women's college located in Massachusetts, and moved to New York, where she initially worked as a public relations agent, and then moved on to Conde Nast Traveler magazine. After a while, Yanagihara became an editor, in 2015 she began working at T: The New York Times Style Magazine, and later, after the success of “A Little Life”, she left that position as well.
