Theodore Dreiser is a famous American writer and public figure. His works, addressing pressing social issues, enjoyed enormous success with readers around the world and still evoke the liveliest interest. The novel "Jenny Gerhardt" (1911), which tells the story of... a girl from a poor family, is considered the most poetic of Dreiser's works. Critics did not immediately appreciate the writer's talent: his compositions were labeled as immoral, cynical, and damaging to the American dream. In 1930, Sinclair Lewis, in his Nobel speech, stated that the prize rightfully should have gone to Theodore Dreiser, for it was he who "freed American literature from Victorian modesty and directed it along the path of bold, honest, and passionate depiction of life."
