Tristan and Isolde. Tristan et Iseut

«Tristan and Isolde» — a medieval chivalric romance about love, duty, and choice, centered around the nephew of King Mark and the Irish princess Isolde. On his uncle's behalf, the young knight travels to Ireland, and this journey determines his future fate. A love potion accidentally consumed binds the heroes with a feeling that directly contradicts courtly order, vassal loyalty, and Isolde's future marriage. The entire narrative hinges on this conflict: the heroes must hide their affection, live under the threat of exposure, and make choices between honor, duty, and personal happiness.

Before you is a literary reconstruction of the legend, created by Joseph Bédier, who worked as a philologist-medievalist and compared different versions of the plot to restore a coherent image of the ancient tradition. In this edition, the French original is presented alongside the translation by A. N. Veselovsky, with the lines arranged in parallel. This format is especially convenient for those studying the French language, interested in the history of translation, or wanting to compare the sound of the famous legend in the original and in Russian.
