As for the hero, by the author's own admission, there is none in the book, or rather, this role is distributed among several young men, in greater or lesser heroic degrees. In one of them, the awkward dreamy young man Johnny Imse, Trollope reflected himself from the times when he worked as a minor clerk in government service and everyone regarded him as a complete idiot. Allington is quite far from Barchester, and characters from other «Chronicles» appear infrequently in the novel, however, several familiar characters will be seen by the reader. Furthermore, for the first time here, Plantagenet Palliser will appear — the hero of another famous Trollope cycle.
The novel is printed with a complete set of classic illustrations by the famous Pre-Raphaelite artist John Everett Millais, which accompanied the first edition of «The Small House at Allington» in Cornhill Magazine.
