«The Club of Walking Catastrophes» — a novel about women defending their freedom, dignity, and well-being in the American South during the Great Depression. This is the second book by Kathryn Stockett, whose debut novel «The Help», released in 2009, spent 100 weeks on The New York Times bestseller list and sold over ten million copies.
When American gentry goes bankrupt, the most oppressed prove to be the most resilient — orphans, poor old maids, women with difficult fates. In the hypocritical society of a Southern town, where women's freedom is suppressed, cruelty is masked by verses from the Bible, and intrigues brew behind silver coffee pots at ladies' club meetings, they unite to embark on a witty and extremely unorthodox venture that could turn into a disaster or a success. This is a tragic and funny story, full of satire and realism, a large-scale and colorful portrait of Southern American society at a turning historical moment.
