Anatomy of a Game. From Modding to Mastery

The book tells about game modding – the creation of modifications and extensions for 3D, 2.5-D, and 2D games. Modding skills simplify entry into the game development industry and the path to mastery in game design, even if a person does not have an academic background in computer science. It describes the creation of prototypes and refinement of game levels using Unreal Engine tools. Basic information is provided about the structure of game engines and the selection of an appropriate game engine. The development of game graphics, game levels, locations, handling shaders, sprites, and developing artificial intelligence for game characters is discussed. Attention is paid to game physics and general issues of 3D modeling, including working with ZBrush technology and preparing textures. Various aspects of reverse engineering and backward compatibility, level design, and increasing user engagement in the gameplay are touched upon.
