The narrative is told from the perspective of the main character Lucy Snowe. At 22 years old, she is a complete orphan without relatives, friends, a roof over her head, or money; nothing keeps her in England, so she moves to Labascur – a fictional kingdom inspired by Belgium. After settling in a boarding house as a governess, she rises to become an English teacher. Everything would be fine, but Lucy suffers from loneliness, as she still has not made any friends. Over time, it becomes clear that the doctor treating the girls in the boarding house, Dr. John Graham Bretton, is an old acquaintance of Lucy; his mother is her godmother. Now communication and love enter her life.
Reading the novel "Villette," we somehow hear not just the voice of its main character Lucy Snowe, but that of Charlotte Brontë herself. Lucy has experienced tragedy, and around her, it seems, a ring of loneliness is tightening, but the trials have made her strong and resilient.
The novel "Villette" by Charlotte Brontë is her last and one of her most autobiographical works, full of deep personal experiences. She experienced the same losses as her character Lucy Snowe: the loss of all her siblings to illnesses and other causes.
