Russian Golgotha

«Russian Golgotha» — one of the dramatic events in Russian history. The Patriarch of Moscow and all Russia, Alexius II, referred to the notorious Butovsky shooting range in this way because hundreds of Orthodox priests, monks, nuns, and parishioners perished... there. As a boy, Samuel was taken by a tsarist officer from a remote village in the Far North, exchanged for hunting puppies, and brought to the Ryazan province. His fate unfolded quite happily for a certain period — he graduated from gymnasium, acquired a profession and a job, married a pretty priest's daughter, and upon retiring, became a clergyman himself. But he lived in an era of great upheaval — revolutions, World War I, and Civil Wars, breaking the established way of life.
