The memoirs of the researcher of Yiddish culture are interesting in themselves. No less interesting is the author's family:... the grandmother of Professor David G. Roskis, Fradl Mats, was the owner of a large Yiddish publishing house in Vilna, his mother, Masha Roskis, performed Yiddish songs in her youth, and in her mature years and until old age, held a literary salon in Montreal. He himself, as a student, was acquainted with the leading figures of post-war Yiddish literature — Itzik Manger, Avrom Sutzkever, Rokhl Korn.
The life path of David G. Roskis himself, despite outward prosperity, is full of inner drama. From early youth, he tried to find himself — in the Jewish religion, in Yiddish culture, in a complicated family history, which was served in portions by his mother, along with the changes of dishes at family meals, in strict sequence, with previously known and expected gaps. In his youth, he fell in love, darted between countries and groups of friends, remaining faithful only to one — the Yiddish language. Ah, yes — and the literature in it. In mature years… However, the book about his mature years has not yet been written. We can only judge them by his fruitful work as a teacher, researcher, and writer, — no longer in Yiddish, but in English (and now also in Russian translations).
