The three-volume "History of Hellenism" by Johann Gustav Droysen is the first and still the only fundamental work that opened up to readers this relatively late period of ancient history (from the rise of Macedonia under kings Philip II and Alexander to the intervention of Rome in Greek affairs), which was practically unknown before and was viewed only as a chaotic accumulation of wars, dynamic disputes, and political upheavals. It was Droysen who gave this era the concise definition of Hellenism, introducing into the historiographical tradition of classical studies the terms "Hellenism," "Diadochi," and "Epigones."
