South Baltic Slavs and Germans in the 8th-12th centuries

The publication includes monographs by Polish and Russian historians A.I. Pavinsky (1840–1896) and I.A. Lebedev (1846–1916), which were published in 1871 and 1876. Their works are a continuation of the famous "History of the Baltic Slavs" by A.F. Hilferding (published... in 1854–1855, reprinted in 2013) and narrate the struggle of the South Baltic Slavs, who gave us the Varangians (Varangian Rus), against the powerful onslaught of the German-Catholic world, about the struggle, in the assessment of the German chronicler of the 10th century, Widukind of Corvey, "for freedom, against the threat of the greatest slavery."
Both historians acknowledge that they turned to this topic due to the very biased approach of German scholars to the interpretation of the history of the South Baltic Slavs, who were conquered and annihilated by their ancestors.
