French thinker René Guénon is one of the most unusual figures in the history of 20th-century philosophy. He was a member of the Sufi order Shadhiliyya under the name Abd al-Wahid Yahya, married to the daughter of an Egyptian sheikh - a descendant of Muhammad. Guénon never taught at a university and did not consider himself a discoverer or creator of his own teaching, believing that he was simply conveying to Europeans truths understandable to any inhabitant of the East. However, in the academic world, he is regarded as the author of a number of concepts and the founder of an entire direction in philosophy - traditionalism.
His goal was to return humanity to Tradition - a collection of "non-human" knowledge passed down from generation to generation by a caste of initiates.
