My Life

The story by A. P. Chekhov "My Life" was published in 1896. Anton Pavlovich tells about a nobleman who became fascinated with the philosophy of L. N. Tolstoy — Tolstoyism. Because of this, the hero Misaïl Položnev leaves his home... and becomes a painter, living a simple life and working hard. The artist Ilya Repin highly valued this work: "What simplicity, strength, and unexpectedness; this gray commonplace tone, this prosaic worldview is presented in such new and captivating lighting. And what a language! — The Bible." Lev Nikolayevich Tolstoy himself received the story with restraint, although he appreciated the development of some characters.
