Autumn in Petersburg

John Maxwell Coetzee is a South African writer, Nobel Prize laureate, and acknowledged master of psychological prose.
The main character of "Autumn in Petersburg" is Fyodor Mikhailovich Dostoevsky, who returns to St. Petersburg in the autumn of 1869 to investigate the tragic death of his stepson. The writer is beside himself with grief and struggles with seizures of epilepsy, while the landlady of the apartment where the deceased lived provokes a genuine obsession in him. However, Dostoevsky is determined to find the truth – did Pavel die a natural death? Was he a revolutionary? Did he love his adoptive father or despise him? To answer these questions, Fyodor Mikhailovich will have to confront Sergey Nechayev – an underground revolutionary and the evil genius of Petersburg.
