The plot of the novel is based on real events of the 18th century, occurring not only in Russia but also in Europe. In particular, the Seven Years' War, during which Russian troops, in a blaze of glory, first took Berlin. This is the story of the life of Charles de Beaumont, Chevalier d'Eon — a truly great diplomat and spy, swordsman and intriguer, writer and warrior, who lived for 82 years, 34 of which he was considered a woman.
