Although Professor Binns was a disembodied ghost, he also willingly used material from "A History of Magic" in his lessons on this subject. Hermione Granger had a spare copy of this book in her private quarters.

Harry Potter found a name for his owl in this textbook, naming it Pigwidgeon. Pigwidgeon is the surname of one of the wizards mentioned in the book.
