In the summer of 1944, after 8 months of acquaintance, Burroughs and Kerouac found themselves caught in a tragic situation: Lucien Carr, a friend of Kerouac, stabbed David Kammerer, a classmate of Burroughs. A few days later, unable to bear... the torment of his conscience, he surrendered to the authorities, but the police held Burroughs and Kerouac accountable for 'failure to report', and Kerouac even had to spend some time behind bars. The future stars of Beat literature wrote a collaborative book under the fresh impression of the event, each bringing to life a specific character of the bloody drama. Unfortunately for fans, the novel 'And the Hippos Cooked in Their Pools' only saw the light of day in 2008, after Carr's death.
