Kievan Rus. Main Features of the Socio-Economic Structure

In his book "Kievan Rus. Main Features of the Socio-Economic Structure," the renowned scholar I.Ya. Froianov rejected the prevailing view in Soviet historiography regarding the class and feudal nature of Rus, and also provided evidence that in Ancient Rus, large private land ownership was developed rather weakly and was actually based more on the labor of serfs rather than feudal subjects, of whom there were few among the entire population, and this group included some of the smerds.
