Hotel Savoy

First printed in several issues of the Frankfurter Zeitung in the spring of 1924, the novel by the famous Austrian writer and journalist Joseph Roth (1894–1939) became one of the bestsellers in Weimar Germany. The action takes place in a hotel in the Polish town of Łódź, inhabited by soldiers returning home from World War I, impoverished citizens of the collapsed Austro-Hungarian Empire, ruined merchants seeking to emigrate to America, unemployed cabaret dancers, and other characters from the periphery of Europe.
