Henry David Thoreau, a remarkable American writer, called himself "a watcher of rains and snowstorms". At the age of twenty-seven, he withdrew from society and, having built a cabin on the shore of Walden Pond, lived there for two years.... Thus appeared one of the most amazing books in the entire history of literature: "Walden, or Life in the Woods". Living far from civilization and in harmony with the surrounding world, the writer managed to embody the main principles of transcendentalism - a philosophical movement whose chief theorist was the poet and philosopher Ralph Waldo Emerson. Thoreau's account of the two years spent alone in nature became a classic of American literature, studied and loved by readers around the world.
