Dieu Lan, born in 1920, survived the Japanese occupation, and her father was killed right before her eyes.

After the war, during the Land Reform, she had to flee to Hanoi with six children, leaving everything behind in her native village, and trying to survive by any means... years later, she tells her story to her granddaughter, whose parents and uncles went down the Ho Chi Minh Trail to fight in a new war that divided not only their family but the entire country.
