In Russia, there has always... been an interest in Japanese culture. Several domestic writers began translating folk tales in the late 19th century. They, by their own admission, "selected the most suitable - understandable - fairy tales for the Russian audience." For the first time, translations, many of which remain exemplary today, are gathered under one cover.
The book is adorned with illustrations by Kobayashi Eitaku (1843-1890), specially created for the publishing project of Hasegawa Takejiro (1853-1938), which had tremendous success in the New World - traditional chirimen-bon books.
