In Russia, there has always... been an interest in Japanese culture. Several domestic writers began translating folk tales in the late 19th century. They, by their own admission, "selected the most suitable - understandable - fairy tales for the Russian audience." The book is adorned with illustrations by Kobayashi Eitaku (1843-1890), specially created for the publishing project of Hasegawa Takejiro (1853-1938), which had tremendous success in the New World - traditional chirimen-bon books.
