Misteries

Knut Hamsun is a recognized classic of Norwegian literature, winner of the Nobel Prize in 1920. Hamsun gained worldwide fame with the novel "Hunger" (1890), which astonished readers with its innovative style and boldness of expression. The novel "Misteries" was... created after "Hunger" and, according to the writer's intention, was supposed to revolutionize Norwegian literature. Its plot is quite characteristic of Hamsun's prose: an extraordinary young man arrives in a small town with an old-fashioned bourgeois lifestyle, whose attitude towards life and love is very far from conventional morality...
"Misteries" achieved colossal success and influenced many writers of the 20th century, including Henry Miller, who wrote: "There are few books in the world that I can constantly return to, and one of them is Hamsun's 'Misteries'..." The novel was translated into Russian by Lilianna Lungina.
