O. Henry is the pen name of William Sydney Porter, a recognized master of short stories with unexpected endings. The collection "Four Million" first appeared in 1906. At that time, there existed a special elite class in New York — millionaires living a secluded life. It consisted of no more than four hundred people, and newspaper writers believed that only these individuals deserved interest. O. Henry disagreed with them; he believed that all four million residents of New York were equally worthy of attention. After this book, O. Henry became famous throughout America.
