In Arthur Conan Doyle's historical novel "Exiles", events in France at the end of the 17th century are described. The rearrangement of power and the political situation in the country, ruled by Louis XIV and his new favorite, the Marquise de Maintenon, force the main characters of the book to make a difficult choice, exchanging the Old World for the New, where the sword is replaced by a carbine, and an owner of a powdered wig can be scalped. The translation of the novel is printed based on the edition by P. P. Soikin from 1928 with the addition of the missed 31st chapter. The book is decorated with illustrations by two artists: the Frenchman Charles Jua and the Swede Ture de Tulstrup, who moved to the USA.
The adventure novel "Exiles" was written by Arthur Conan Doyle at the end of the 19th century. The book was published in 1892 and immediately attracted the attention of European readers. The first part of the novel describes events taking place in France at the end of the 17th century. Much has been written about the reign of Louis XIV, and the novel was more interesting for its second part, where Doyle vividly describes the adventures of his heroes in the New World, to which they were forced to move due to circumstances. For most inhabitants of good old Europe, America still remained an exotic land, and its recent history, full of bloody skirmishes with the Indians, even more ignited the public's interest. Doyle satisfied this interest by describing the "beaver wars" of the settlers with the Iroquois, the wild endless forests of Canada, and the various difficulties of life in the open air.
While working on "Exiles", Arthur Conan Doyle entered into a peculiar creative rivalry with James Fenimore Cooper, whose novels "The Deerslayer" and "The Last of the Mohicans" had gained incredible popularity by that time. Their success was phenomenal, as Cooper wrote about what he knew well from childhood - the wild nature of North America and its pioneers. "Exiles" became a worthy response to this literature. Doyle himself considered this book one of his best historical adventure novels.
Illustrations by two artists whose works decorate this edition help to visually glimpse the events described in the book - the Frenchman Charles Jua and the American with Swedish roots Ture de Tulstrup. Jua was born in 1866 in one of the suburbs of Paris and became interested in drawing very early. He studied painting in the workshops of Georges C l eren and Henri Reno. In 1894, together with his wife, symbolist artist Louise Debord, Charles opened his studio in Paris. Jua was attracted to book illustration by the famous French bibliophile and publisher Henri Beraldi. In the second half of his life, Jua became president of the engraving section of the National Society of Fine Arts.
De Tulstrup was eighteen years older than Jua. He was born in Stockholm and initially pursued a military career - he graduated from the Royal Military Academy in the capital, then joined the Foreign Legion in Paris and served in North Africa. However, later in life, Ture experienced a drastic turn - he left the service, first moved to Canada, and then to the USA, where he began collaborating with several magazines and newspapers, mainly producing illustrations on military historical themes. In particular, de Tulstrup became the author of a large series of works dedicated to the Civil War in the USA and life in Virginia in the mid-18th century.
