Picking victims on the highways, he played a "death game" with each of them, in which he strangled them, then revived them several times before killing them. In a twisted manner, the glory-hungry maniac began a campaign for the release of Sosnovki and Pavlinak. Jesperson sent mocking confessions of the murders to newspaper offices, drawing a smiley face at the end of the messages – for which he earned the nickname "The Killer with the Happy Face".
