The founder of the genre of the European Christmas story is considered to be Charles Dickens, who published "A Christmas Carol" in 1843 about the miser Ebenezer Scrooge, who hated Christmas but changed after meeting the spirits of Christmas Past,... Present, and Future. Around the same time, the tradition of the Christmas tale develops in Russian literature, with a vivid example being "The Night Before Christmas" by N. V. Gogol. In the second half of the 19th century, Russian writers - Dostoevsky, Leskov, Chekhov, Kuprin, and many others - reinterpret the Dickensian Christmas story, focusing on social issues and Christian values, and adapt it to the Russian context. The best examples of the Christmas story genre, as well as the reflections of writers and publicists on the bright holiday of Christ's Nativity, are presented in this publication.
