Asle and Alida wander through the streets of Bjørgvina late in the autumn twilight in search of shelter. But nowhere is there a welcome for the unwed lovers who are about to have a child. The fjord glimmers in the dark, it is raining, the child is stirring in Alida's belly. They are so tired and so cold. In this world, they need no one but each other. And fate leads them on dangerous paths.

An incredibly deep and poetic trilogy-parable about love, crime, music, and death. "Trilogy" consists of three novellas, which are considered to be among the most important works of Fosse — "Sleepless", "Ulava's Dreams", and "Evening Knitting".
