“Parisian Mysteries” by Eugene Sue is perhaps the most popular novel of the 19th century, giving rise to many imitations and creating a special direction in adventure literature. This genre of “crime fiction” includes such works as “Les Miserables” by Hugo, “The Hunchback” by Feval, “The Slums of St. Petersburg” by Krestovsky and many other famous novels (Umberto Eco published a list of forty novels that are a direct imitation of “Mysteries of Paris” ).
The book very realistically depicts the colorful, cruel, adventurous world of the Parisian bottom. Incredible adventures, unexpected plot twists, love affairs and colorful characters continue to excite readers today, and the number of film adaptations and theatrical productions of “Parisian Mysteries” is impossible to count.
The text is accompanied by numerous illustrations by the Italian artist Osvaldo Tofani (1849–1915), never before published in Russia.
