I, Tituba, Witch of Salem

Maryse Condé – a French writer, the first recipient of the New Academy Award – an alternative Nobel Prize.

A native of Guadeloupe, a journalist, a professor at Columbia University, in her works she shows how colonialism has changed the world and how its victims regained their heritage.

In France, the writer chairs the Committee for the Memory of Slavery.

“I, Tituba, Witch of Salem” – a historical novel dedicated to the resonant events of 1692, when nineteen people were convicted and executed during the witch hunt.

At seven, Tituba witnessed a terrible event – the death of her own mother.

Later, she was sold into slavery and sent to America, where she was accused of witchcraft.

Maryse Condé not only tells the story of a Black woman's life, but she makes a powerful social statement: there is no place for racism and sexism in a healthy society.
