Lovecraft in the 1920s gained such popularity that hundreds of creators of fantasy, including Neil Gaiman and Stephen King, continue to expand his mythology. Each monstrous deity in the Lovecraftian pantheon embodies one of the countless facets of chaos. Lurking in the depths of the ocean or residing deep in impenetrable forests, sleeping in Egyptian pyramids or entombed in mountain caves, having come to our planet from the stars or from the abyss of countless ages, they are invariably hostile to humanity and beyond rational understanding.
