Edgar Allan Poe 1809 – 1849 — an American writer, poet, and literary critic. His attention to detail, sharp analytical mind, and polished language earned him recognition from readers and critics in America and Europe during his lifetime, despite accusations of immorality and the abundance of scenes of brutality in his works. Poe's detective stories laid the foundation for the genre, and his anxiety-ridden and tense gothic tales inspired Lovecraft and Hitchcock.
