Peter I

There is no more controversial figure among Russian rulers than Peter I, who is justly called the Great. Some are convinced that there has never been a more outstanding ruler in Russia, while others believe it would have been better... if he had never existed at all. It is impossible to erase Peter from history, and even the most ardent critics have to reckon with this.
In assessing Peter's personality, one cannot ignore his status. Rulers are special people. They are not forgiven for what would be excused for any of their subjects, and they bear huge responsibility. However, the cruelty inherent in Peter, his uncompromising nature, and bursts of uncontrolled anger frightened both his contemporaries and descendants. So, was there more bad or good in Peter?
