The tragic story of the spiritual rebirth of Prince Nekhlyudov and the convict Katusha Maslova has taken its place among the greatest masterpieces of world literature of the 19th century. This edition reproduces illustrations for the novel by the artist Leonid Osipovich Pasternak (1862–1945). In 1898, L. N. Tolstoy himself approached him with a proposal to create this cycle. The illustrations by L. O. Pasternak were highly appreciated by the writer, and in 1900, they were awarded a medal at the Exposition Universelle in Paris. The book also includes detailed comments by Doctor of Philological Sciences N. G. Mikhnovets.
