Mrs. Dalloway

Clarissa Dalloway, a socialite in her early fifties, is preparing for a reception she is hosting at her home. In the morning, she steps out to buy flowers, which she loves very much; she must decorate her home with them... by evening. While walking through London, she recalls her youth and first love. In another part of London, Septimus Warren Smith, a World War I veteran suffering from shell shock, is going to a psychiatrist with his wife, Lucrezia. Smith's day intertwines with Clarissa's and her friends' days, their lives converging when the party reaches its peak. Upon learning of the tragedy involving Smith, Clarissa reevaluates her life and her attitude towards death.

A masterful novel by Virginia Woolf, in which the past, present, and future merge into a significant day in June 1923.
